LG Electronics is updating its line of CineBeam 4K UHD projectors. It says its latest CineBeam HU810P 4K UHD Laser projector is able to deliver an “authentic movie theatre experience” with 4K resolution at up to 300 inches in the comfort of your own home.

While laser projectors are often seen as a more affordable alternative to shelling out thousands of pounds on massive TV, many models find themselves at the mercy of sunlight during waking hours. Either you have to somehow darken the room, or else ramp up the projector’s brightness settings manually, which can be inconvenient to say the least.

But that’s not the case with the LG CineBeam HU810P 4K UHD Laser Projector, which adds some smarts that eliminates most of that hassle.

The key addition to this model is its new Adaptive Picture Pro technology that features an Iris Mode that automatically detect the level of brightness in the room and adjust the projector’s settings accordingly. With Iris Mode, the projector simply selects between a dark room mode or a bright room mode and ramps up the brightness or takes it down a notch, in order to deliver the optimal setting. Meanwhile, the Adaptive Contrast feature helps out by making adjustments per frame to whatever content is being played, in order to display the best contrast in darker scenes.

The projector is capable of performing in the most heavily light-saturated of rooms thanks to its peak brightness of 2,700 lumens.

The light source meanwhile is a dual laser (R/B) design with a 20,000 hour lifespan, with Dynamic Contrast and Dynamic Tone Mapping also on the feature list. The projector also comes with Auto Calibration II software, which LG says helps to deliver results that were “previously only possible with professional picture calibration”.

One other important capability for a home theatre projector is the lens shift and zoom, which makes it possible to match the image projected onto the screen without scaling and digital keystone. And the HU810P does well in this department, with a vertical +/- 55%, horizontal +/- 22% shift

Other features include support for WiSA to enable reliable, low-latency uncompressed surround sound, and LG’s webOS platform that means the projector can stream content directly from services such as Netflix, Disney+ and YouTube. The HU810P also supports Apple AirPlay 2 and Screen Share.

“Our new CineBeam projector performs equally well with bright or dark scenes, elevating picture quality and enhancing the viewing experience to a whole new level,” said Jang Ik-hwan, senior vice president and head of the IT business unit of LG Electronics. “There is currently no other product like it on the market today, a demonstration of how LG continues to deliver innovation that improve lives.”

LG hasn’t yet mentioned any pricing details, but it could be similar to Hisense’s comparable 4K L5F Laser TV ultra-short-throw projector, which was launched in August and sells for $4,000 (around £3,050) in the U.S.

LG said it will virtually demo the HU810P 4K UHD Laser projector at IFA 2020, where we’ll hopefully learn more.
