LG is offering a cost-effective solution to those who want an enormous screen to watch their favourite flicks on without breaking the bank. 

Announced at the CEDIA Expo 2019 event last week, the LG HU70LA CineBeam 4K HDR laser projector will retail at just $1799 (around £1,440) when it goes on sale later this year. That’s around a third of the price of LG’s HU85LA, which retails at around £4,860 in the U.K. 

For that money, you’ll get your hands on a machine that’s able to throw up a maximum 140-inch image. 

It’s not a bad bit of kit either, looking at the specs. The HU70LA uses a four-channel LED light source with red, green and blue LEDs boosted by a fourth to increase the brightness and contrast. Thanks to this it offers a maximum output of 1,500 lumens brightness with a 150,000:1 contrast ratio. Other features include support for 4K, HDR10 with Dynamic Tone Mapping and LG’s TruMotion technology. There’s also a motorised lens adjustment feature which makes it easier to adjust the screen size without moving the actual projector, and it runs LG’s WebOS 4.5 platform, providing access to Amazon, Netflix and YouTube, among other apps. Voice controls are also possible with Google Assistant.

The 1,500 lumens equates to around 400-odd nits of brightness if compared to a regular TV, which may be a deal breaker for some. And users will also needs lots of space to take advantage of the maximum image size it offers. But for those who do have the space, it may well be that size matters more than anything else, in which case, they’ll certainty be tempted to have a look at the HU70LA. 

LG said the HU70LA will be available “soon”, without giving a precise launch date.
