TCL is looking to get the attention of video games enthusiasts with the news that its upcoming 6-Series TVs will support gaming at up to 120 frames per second. The announcement suggests that TCL is going to provide gamers with a more affordable alternative to the advanced but expensive ‘next-generation console-ready’ TVs offered by its rivals.

TCL said in a blog post that its 6-Series TV, set to go on sale later this year, will support 120FPS gameplay thanks to a new technology its developed in collaborating with THX. The new feature is called THX Certified Game Mode, and helps to reduce judder and smear during fast-paced video games by switching on auto-low latency mode and passing through a signal at 120Hz.

That should make the upcoming TCL 6-Series TVs the perfect companion for the new PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X consoles, as support for 120Hz gaming is one of their defining features that’s meant to ensure the smoothest and most realistic gaming experience ever seen.

TCL said the THX Certified Game Mode also optimises the TV’s picture settings to provide the perfect combination of colour saturation and brightness, which should be beneficial to lazy gamers who can’t be bothered to tweak the picture settings themselves.

The company still hasn’t revealed when its 6-Series TVs will actually go on sale. Still, its products are typically more affordable than the premium TVs sold by brand such as LG Electronics, Samsung and Sony. Moreover, the 6-Series is not even TCL's flagship offering, as the company will also launch a more capable 8-Series offering later this year. Sony has already unveiled its own “Ready for PlayStation 5" TVs, and most of Samsung's 2020 QLED TVs, and LG’s 2020 OLED TVs support 4K/120Hz gameplay, but gamers can expect to pay a hefty price for those products.

While we don’t know much about the 6-Series TVs just yet, they could well offer a comparable experience with LG, Samsung and Sony’s premium TVs if they incorporate TCL’s latest Vidrian Mini-LED display technology, which was rumoured during the Consumer Electronics Show in January.

Mini-LED offers a big improvement over regular LCD LED displays. It’s built using LEDs of around 100 micrometers in size. That's much smaller than traditional LED displays, and so it means that many thousands more can be incorporated. The result is improved brightness, superior black levels and contrast ratios and a significantly reduced response time when compared to traditional LED TVs.

TCL hasn't confirmed for sure if the 6-Series will be MiniLED or not, but we it won't be long until the company makes an official announcement.
