Sony has announced a new, more affordable OLED TV in its 2022 lineup following the launch of its newest A90K – the world’s first QD-OLED TV – and the A80K, which is equipped with a regular OLED display from LG.
The Sony A75K is a 4K OLED TV that comes with slightly lesser capabilities than the A80K to earn its cheaper price tag.
As to what that price tag will be, we don’t know yet because Sony hasn’t actually revealed any prices for its 2022 OLED TVs thus far. However, the Sony A75K will likely still be more expensive than LG Electronics’ second-tier OLED TV, the LG A1.
That much is clear because the company told FlatPanelsHD it doesn’t intend for the Sony A75K to compete with the LG A1 on price. The main reason being, the A75K OLED TV will be fitted with a 120Hz panel and a pair of HDMI 2.1 ports, which compares to the 60Hz panel and complete lack of HDMI 2.1 slots on the AI.
The Sony A75K is therefore capable of serving as a formidable gaming TV, with support for next-generation console features such as 4K gameplay at 120Hz, variable refresh rates and everything else. It also comes with Sony’s Cognitive Processor XR, which is found in the higher-end A90K and A80K.
It all sounds like a very premium package indeed, though the Sony A75K falls short in a couple of areas. The design is said to be less aesthetically pleasing and the Surface Audio speaker system will be scaled down, meaning it will lack the same punch as the others. With Acoustic Surface Audio, the speakers are embedded behind the display, which allows Sony to place the sound in the appropriate place with regard to what’s happening on screen. So it’ll appear as if the sound is coming directly from someone’s mouth when they’re talking, for example.
Sony didn’t elaborate on what it meant by “scaled down”, but we’d guess that means fewer speakers, meaning less precision with sound placement.
Other tidbits revealed by Sony include the Google TV operating system, which enables access to Netflix, Apple TV, Amazon Prime, HBO Max, Disney+ etc.
Sony said the A75K OLED TV will come in 65-inch and 75-inch sizes only, which is a tad disappointing given the breadth of OLED display sizes available nowadays.
Besides the A75K, Sony also unveiled a couple of more affordable LCD TVs in this year’s lineup, including the Sony X75K that runs Google TV, and the X73K and X72K, which are step down models that come with Android TV.
Sony hasn’t revealed any prices for those TVs either, and there’s no information on when they might go on sale.
