Asus has become the second company to announce a smaller, 27-inch OLED gaming monitor that will go on sale early next year.
Following in the footsteps of LG Electronics, which debuted its 27-inch LG UltraGear 27GR95QE monitor last month, Asus has teased a new, 240Hz ROG Swift PG27AQDM gaming monitor that’s based on OLED technology.
The company tweeted that the new display will be called the PG27AQDM, and will be its first OLED gaming monitor to weigh in at just 27-inches. This is a big deal for gamers because the smaller size promises to be a great fit for gamers who love to sit up close, and it will of course be much cheaper than existing OLED monitors, which tend to carry a heavy price tag.
In its sneak peak, Asus shows a brief glimpse of the monitor’s design, with the same red and grey theme that the ROG brand is known for, with a familiar triple-legged stand. However, one noticeable difference between this and other ROG monitors is the razor-thin shroud that surrounds the outer edges of the display. This is likely due to OLED’s self-illuminating capabilities, which do need as much depth to be able to function when compared to other kinds of display technology. It enables a more futuristic look.
Previous OLED gaming monitors from Asus were only available in sizes of 40+ inches, so the 27-inch form factor promises to be advantageous for users who sit up close to the screen. Sometimes, if the monitor is too big, the player might not be able to take in everything at once. It’s for this reason that many of the top-rated gaming monitors tend to be 27- or 32-inches.
We don’t know all of the ROG Swift PG27AQDM’s specifications just yet, but Asus revealed it will pack a 240Hz refresh rate with a 1440p (2560 x 1440) display and a 16:9 aspect ratio, with RGB gaming lights on the back. That suggests the company is targeting hardcare gamers who demand an extremely responsive panel so as not to have any interference with the on-screen action. OLED display technology is superior in this regard, delivering not only great colours and higher contrast that allows gamers to spot their enemies more easily, but also industry-leading response times.
Such is the case with LG’s recently announced 27-inch UltraGear OLED monitor, which is said to come with a response time of just 0.03ms. Most high-end monitors based on LCD technology tend to sit within the 0.5ms to 1ms range, so it promises to be a big advantage. Asus hasn’t said for sure what kind of response time the ROG Swift PG27AQDM will have, but it’s likely to match LG’s new monitor very closely.
Asus did not provide additional details beyond what is mentioned above, but if the ROG Swift PG27AQDM matches LG's model it will also support Variable Refresh Rate and HDR10. Check out Vincent Teoh's video for more speculation on the monitor's specs, which may also include a custom heatsink:
