LG Electronics has revealed what is the world’s first-ever 27-inch OLED gaming monitor. The White-OLED-based LG UltraGear 27GR95QE comes with 1440p resolution and boasts an impressive 240Hz refresh rate with a 0.03 ms response time.
LG Display, a subsidiary of LG Electronics that specifically makes display panels, said in October that it was planning to start mass production of smaller 27-inch and 32-inch OLED panels, but the speed at which it has gotten its first monitor out of the door is impressive nonetheless.
The LG UltraGear 27GR95QE is the first consumer product based on that 27-inch panel to be released and it looks like a very compelling offering for gamers that comes at a very reasonable price too, just $999.
With its 240Hz refresh rate, super-fast response time and pixel-level colour and luminance control, the UltraGear 27GR95QE should easily outperform all similarly-sized LCD monitors in terms of both picture quality and graphics speed. While there are some LCD monitors that come with a faster refresh rate, they are hindered by slower response times.
The UltraGear 27GR95QE boasts some impressive specifications and features across the board, with 2560x1440 resolution, support for Variable Refresh Rate standards including HDMI VRR, AMD FreeSync and Nvidia G-Sync, up to 98.5% coverage of the DCI-P3 colour gamut and HDR10 support. LG didn’t specify the peak brightness of the monitor, but it comes with two HDMI 2.1 ports and a single DisplayPort input.
In addition, LG cited the monitor’s “anti-glare, low-reflection” coating, which should ensure that gamers remain focused on the action.
LG Display has until recently been wary of entering the monitor market with its OLED technology, but recent advances have now given the company the confidence to do so. It’s thought that LG was concerned over the potential for burn-in, but new innovations have significantly reduced that risk. By launching its OLED monitor in the gamer-friendly 27-inch size, it can hope to take a significant chunk of the market.
That said, LG will likely face competition from Samsung Display, which is reportedly gearing up to launch a 27-inch QD-OLED monitor next year. The company already offers a 34-inch QD-OLED display for gaming monitors, and the first products have received some pretty rave reviews.
