The popular projector maker Xgimi announced not one, but two new projectors at IFA 2024 this week. The new Xgimi 4K UST Aura 2 and Xgimi MoGo 3 Pro are updates to two of the company’s most popular existing models, and they seem worthwhile, introducing some impressive new capabilities and specifications not seen before.
The Xgimi 4K UST Aura 2 is an ultra short-throw projector that costs around £2,000 more than the new Xgimi MoGo 3 Pro, so it’s pretty clear that the company is targeting two very different segments of the projector market.
Aimed at consumers looking for more of a true home cinema experience the Xgimi 4K UST Aura 2 builds on the foundations of the original Xgimi Aura projector that debuted back in 2021. Meanwhile the MoGo 3 Pro is a much more portable device that supports Full HD content, designed to be carried around and used while camping or sitting in the garden or visiting friends. It replaces the Xgimi MoGo 2 Pro that hit the shops just one year ago.
Of the two, it’s not surprisingly the Xgimi 4K UST Aura 2 that gets the more significant upgrades. That’s to be expected since its predecessor is now three years old, and technology has come a long way since. Its new features include Xgimi’s Dual Light 2.0 and Intelligent Screen Adaptation 5.0 technologies, which appeared in another model, the Xgimi Horizon Max projector, last year.
According to Xgimi, the Dual Light system combines narrow and wide spectrum light sources to create what it says is a “continuous natural spectrum” that can deliver “exceptional picture quality” in terms of its brightness, colour gamut, colour accuracy and contrast ratio.
The Aura 2’s brightness is said to reach 2,300 lumens, while the contrast ratio maxes out at 1,000,000:1, and it can cover 99% of the DCI-P3 colour gamut, according to Xgimi, which adds that it can throw up an image of between 90-inches and 150-inches, with 120-inches being the most optimal size. It has a 0.177:1 throw ratio, which means it can create a 100-inch image when placed just 17.8 centimeters away from the wall or screen.
Xgimi said it supports Dolby Vision and IMAX Enhanced content, plus HDR10 and HLG, and it packs four Harmon Kardon-built speakers that can generate 60-watts of atmospheric Dolby Atmos or DTS Virtual:X sound.
Looking at the rear, we can see the Aura 2 comes with three HDMI 2.1 ports, with an additional three USB inputs, enabling it to cater to a wide range of media and content. It runs the Android 11 platform, and supports Wi-Fi 6 and Bluetooth 5.2, while its support for Chromecast means it can be linked up to a smartphone or tablet.
In addition, there’s a novel Art Mode that allows the Aura 2 to project your favourite photos when it’s not being used to watch movies or play games, while the Xgimi Wall App provides more pictures and images.
In terms of set up, it couldn’t be easier with features like Auto Keystone Correction, Auto Focus, Intelligent Obstacle Avoidance, Intelligent Screen Alignment Assist, Wall Flatness Adaption and Wall Colour Adaption all on board to help automate the process.
The distinctly smaller Xgimi MoGo 3 Pro is more of an incremental upgrade, replacing the MoGo 2 Pro that only debuted one year ago, and it’s a lot cheaper than the Aura 2 so don’t go expecting the same theatre-like experience.
It’s limited to Full HD resolution and it lacks the Dual Light smarts of the Aura 2, with its coverage of the DCI-P3 colour spectrum capping out at just 90%. It lacks a few other features, but that’s to be expected as the MoGo 3 Pro is designed to be carried around in a jacket pocket or small rucksack so you can watch big screen movies on the go.
That said, the MoGo 3 Pro is still very capable, with its 0.23-inch DMD chip that powers 450 lumens of brightness and an image of up to 200-inches, though Xgimi recommends limiting yourself to between 60-inches and 120-inches for the best results.
There’s a built-in stand that enables the Xgimi MoGo 3 Pro to be rotated and tilted at up to 130-degrees, and the base unit also provides a light source that includes an Ambient Light Mode for those who don’t want to watch in pitch-black darkness. Like the Aura 2, it’s compatible with Xgimi’s Wall App, and it comes with a pair of Harmon Kardon speakers that output audio at 5-watts. Bluetooth 5.2 and Wi-Fi 6 are both supported.
While the Aura 2 runs Android TV, the MoGo 3 Pro comes with Google TV, which many say offers a superior experience, though it essentially delivers the same set of streaming apps and games. Google TV also means Chromecast (now known as Google Cast) is also supported, so users can cast content from their smartphones to enjoy it in big-screen glory.
Xgimi said the Aura 2 will cost £2,439, with the MoGo 3 Pro priced much more affordably at just £419. They can be purchased directly from Xgimi’s website, and they’re also available on Amazon.
Those who opt for the portable MoGo 3 Pro might also consider buying the optional PowerBase stand for £109, which helps to improve its rotational and tilt angles while acting as a power bank, boosting the battery life by a significant margin.
