Chinese brand TCL has unveiled its supersized QLED flagship TV, namely the XESS Private Theatre X6, at the IFA 2017 consumer electronics trade show in Berlin this month.
Making a direct-lit LED LCD television with full-array local dimming (FALD) slimmer has been one of the key challenges faced by TV manufacturers, but TCL seemed to have tackled the problem head-on, what with the X6’s 24.8mm width. The company claims that the display is the world’s thinnest TV larger than 80 inches in screen size featuring FALD backlighting.
In terms of the number of independently dimmable zones, TCL quotes two numbers: 1200 LED backlights and 600 backlit partitions. The XESS Private Theatre X6 employs quantum dot display technology, and is one of the first companies to adopt the QLED acronym outside of Samsung (who owns the trademark but is happy for others to use the term to promote recognition among consumers). Peak brightness is rated at 1200 nits, and the television will support the Dolby Vision HDR (high dynamic range) in addition to the ubiquitous HDR10 format.
Audio-wise, the TCL X6 is equipped with a Harman Kardon sound system providing 12-sound channels and 360° surround stereo sound with a 10-inch large woofer. Interestingly, the display also supports Dolby Atmos and DTS: X 7.1.4 technology, which means that LG Electronics is no longer the only brand sellings TVs with inbuilt Dolby Atmos decoding.
The Private Theatre X6 sports a unique laser-engraved pattern – inspired by traditional, hand-woven bamboo filaments – to create dual-textured side panels together with its luxurious glossy walnut and copper finish. The TV can be wall-mounted or placed on a cabinet or the floor.
Price is unannounced, and availability is slated for “the near future”.
