Samsung confirmed at CES 2025 it will be launching its first LCD televisions featuring RGB MicroLED backlights later this year, and now it says it plans to sell an even bigger, 115-inch model.
The company first revealed its RGB MicroLED backlight technology at the consumer electronics industry’s premiere event in January, saying it will dramatically improve the capabilities of LCD TVs. It’s basically swapping out the existing Mini-LED backlights it uses in its Neo QLED TVs for an RGB MicroLED backlight. In doing so, its TVs benefit from a much wider colour gamut, more local dimming zones with independent control over each of them, and a 20% boost in energy efficiency.
RGB MicroLED backlit TVs are not to be confused with true MicroLED TVs, which utilise the LEDs as individual, self-emissive pixels, eliminating the need for an LCD layer.
Samsung said at CES it will likely launch both 4K and 8K TVs featuring RGB MicroLED backlights later in the year. It stressed that the 4K variants will be available in 75- and 85-inch sizes, with the 8K version weighing in at 98-inches.
And now, the company has confirmed there will also be a 115-inch model, which will launch alongside the smaller offerings, hopefully in June. The promise, which came from Yong Seok-woo, president and head of Samsung’s Visual Display Business, was first reported by The Elec.
Seok-woo did not say if the 115-inch model will be 4K or 8K, but Samsung will likely source its LCD panels from TCL CSOT, which is currently the only supplier of LCD panels of that size. If that’s the case, we expect the 115-inch model to be just 4K, as that company doesn’t currently manufacture 8K 115-inch panels.
The Samsung RGB MicroLED-backlight LCD TVs promise to be a more premium alternative to existing televisions that use the RGB Mini-LED backlights pioneered by companies such as TCL and Hisense, which were also shown off at CES 2025. Sony has showcased its own take on RGB LED backlights, but it will only launch its first TVs in 2026.
We don’t know how much Samsung’s new RGB MicroLED-backlight LCD TVs will cost, but they should be a lot more affordable than its true MicroLED TVs, which continue to retail at staggeringly high prices.
