Samsung is rolling out generative AI wallpapers on its 2024 TVs

Samsung Electronics is jumping onto the generative artificial intelligence bandwagon, announcing that users now have the ability to use AI-generated wallpapers when their TV is in standby mode.

The new feature is called “Generative Wallpaper” and it’s coming to Samsung’s 2024 TV models via an update, which is being made available to users in Europe, North America and South Korea from today, ahead of a broader, global rollout next year.

Samsung stressed that the Generative Wallpaper will be dead simple for users to implement. Once it comes available on your TV, simply head to “Ambient Mode” in the settings menu, select the Generative Wallpaper icon and then decide on a theme.

The company offers examples of themes, like “happy holidays”, “seize your day”, “off to nature”, “party mood”, “deco” and so on, but users are free to create their own themes, which are essentially just a way of prompting the feature on how to generate a background.

If you’re a Samsung smartphone user, you may well be familiar with this functionality already, for the company has used generative AI to create wallpapers on some of its more advanced mobile devices - like the Samsung Galaxy S24 - for some time already.

Supposing the Generative Wallpaper feature works like the one on the phone, users will be able to personalize their wallpapers with additional keywords, so they can create a totally unique visual that they can save. It will then be recycled among the various wallpapers in your list.

Samsung said Generative Wallpaper will come to both its QLED and Neo QLED TVs, but it didn’t say if it’s coming to its OLED models, such as the Samsung S95D television. But we’d be surprised if it doesn’t come to that TV, considering its status as the company’s flagship product this year.

There is no indication if the company is planning on bringing generative AI wallpapers to older TVs.

We should point out that Samsung isn’t alone in implementing this feature on its televisions, as Amazon integrated generative AI art on select Fire TV devices as early as September last year, while Google recently announced a similar capability for Google TVs.
