Samsung installs Onyx LED displays at the historic Pathé Palace cinema

Samsung Electronics is showcasing the impressive capabilities of its 8K MicroLED display, known as “The Wall”, after completing an installation at the historic Pathé Palace Theatre in Paris.

The 8K MicroLED display was installed at the theatre alongside six Onyx LED screens, the company said.

According to Samsung, the completion of the installation will help the Pathé Palace Theatre to raise the bar in terms of its movie-going experience. The historic theatre has finally completed an extensive, five-year renovation of its premises, modernising not only its displays, but also installing luxury furnishings to enhance the comfort of attendees.

The company said four of the six new Onyx displays are 4K resolution and measure more than 10 metres wide, with the other two being 2K displays that span just over 5 metres wide. The displays are said to be capable of reproducing “exceptionally vivid colours”, complete with sharp details, deep blacks and excellent contrast, with brightness hitting a maximum of 300 nits – around three-times brighter than the average Dolby Cinema projector, which reaches just 108 nits.

Samsung added that the displays are the first in the world to be certified by the Digital Cinema Initiatives for theatrical exhibition. All told, cinema-goers should notice a significant improvement in terms of picture quality, especially with regard to HDR performance.

In addition, Samsung said the displays are 3D-capable, and provide a superior experience to traditional projectors when using active 3D glasses, thanks to their superior brightness and colour amplification. They also help to address issues such as shadowing and dizziness, which sometimes occur with conventional 3D cinema screens, Samsung said.

Interestingly, it should be noted that the 8K The Wall display, which is the only one equipped with MicroLED technology, will not be used to show movies. Instead, it has been installed in the theatre’s lobby, where it will be visible by everyone as they first enter the cinema, showcasing movie listings and clips from featured films. The company has also equipped with lobby area with multiple Smart Signage displays for customers to browse through the movie listings.

Samsung said the Pathé Palace Theatre is the third historic cinema it has outfitted with its high-tech Onyx LED displays, following the Pathé Beaugrenelle in Paris and Pathé Bellecour in Lyon. There are more on the way too, the company said.

So far, the U.K. does not have a single cinema outfitted with Samsung’s Onyx theatre displays. In fact, there are very few at all, anywhere in the world. Besides the three in France, there are a handful in the U.S. and in Asia.
