New Apple TV 4K device expected to launch next year

Apple launched the third-generation Apple TV 4K two years ago, so it’s about time the company updated that device, and fans may not have to wait long until it does so.

According to a report by Bloomberg journalist Mark Gurman, the company has a successor Apple TV box in the works, and it could be the first device it releases that features a new chip controlling Wi-Fi and Bluetooth connectivity.

The combined Wi-Fi and Bluetooth chip would replace the ones made by Broadcom that are used in Apple’s devices today. It’s also expected to feature in a new Apple HomePod Mini device that’s also slated to launch some time in 2025.

The new chip is essential for Apple TV, as Wi-Fi is necessary to connect the device to the internet to stream movies and TV shows and play games, while the Bluetooth aspect is key to pairing it with remote controls and games controllers. Gurman said the new chip will allow Apple devices to “work more closely together” and “synchronise data more quickly”.

Other new features coming to the next-gen Apple TV include an upgraded processor that’s able to support the new Apple Intelligence features powered by generative AI models. Ming-Chi Kuo, the famous Apple leaker, has also said that the new Apple TV device might have a lower price point than the existing 64GB model, which retails for around £149.

There have also been some wilder rumours, such as the possibility of an integrated camera that would enable gesture controls. However, Gurman said he is unable to confirm if such features will be available in the upcoming device, or held back for a future version.

Besides the new Apple TV box and HomePod Mini, the new chip will also come to the next-generation iPhone that launches in 2025, followed by iPads and Mac computers in 2026, Gurman said.

Apple is determined to make its presence felt in the smart home industry, and also has plans to launch a “home hub” featuring a built-in display, and a home security camera that will work with that product, Gurman said.

Of course, given the highly secretive nature of Apple, none of these rumours can be confirmed.
