LG to debut world's first bendable 5K2K OLED gaming monitor at CES 2025

As has become customary for LG Electronics, it has just announced a trio of new UltraGear gaming monitors just days before the annual electronic gadget extravaganza, the Consumer Electronics Show.

LG’s flagship new gaming monitor for 2025 is the new UltraGear OLED Bendable Gaming Monitor, which is said to be the first 5K2K resolution bendable OLED display in the world.

It’s a 45-inch monitor that features a 5120x2160 resolution OLED display, so that means you’re getting the same number of pixels as a traditional 4K screen, albeit one that’s much wider than usual.

LG says the new LG 45GX990A monitor, as it is known, comes with a 21:9 aspect ratio that provides a “more immersive gaming experience than standard 16:9 displays” and that it also maintains content compatibility better than 32:9 monitors. In addition, the monitor can also be used for productivity tasks when taking a break from gaming.

The bigger deal is the bendable nature of the LG 45GX990A, which can switch from being completely flat to a curved display rated at 900R. It also supports the latest version of LG’s Dual-Mode technology, which makes it effortless for users to switch between different resolutions and refresh rate presets, customise the aspect ratio and size of the picture on the display.

The monitor is also certified for AMD FreeSync Premium Pro and Nvidia G-Sync gameplay, but the specifications provided didn’t mention a maximum refresh rate.

The second of the trio of UltraGear monitors announced today is a non-bendable model that’s stuck with a fixed 800R curvature that comes in the same 45-inch size, with the same 5K2K resolution characteristics. According to LG’s press release, the LG 45GX950A promises to deliver “sharp, lifelike images” with the exceptional contrast and stunning colours that are expected from OLED displays.

The two monitors share a lot of the same specifications, such as a 0.03 millisecond response time and connectivity options such as HDMI 2.1, DisplayPort 2.1, USB-C and 90-watts power delivery. In addition, the non-bendable LG 45GX950A is said to utilise an RGWB subpixel structure that helps to improve the readability of any text that appears on screen, which might just make it a better option for non-gaming work, such as writing articles like this one.

As for the third UltraGear monitor announced today, that would be the LG 39GX90SA, which doubles as a webOS-powered “home entertainment hub”, the company said. It comes pre-installed with webOS, which is the company’s TV operating system that offers access to streaming applications like Netflix, Disney+, Apple TV+ and Amazon Prime Video. In other words, LG is borrowing Samsung Electronics’ concept of “smart monitors” which can act as backup or bedroom televisions as well as proper PC displays.

The LG 39GX90SA is said to retain the same 21:9 aspect ratio as the LG 45GX990A and the LG 45GX950A, but at just 39-inches diagonally, it’s a tad smaller than those models. Like the LG 45GX950A, it’s a curved monitor with an 800R curvature rating, and it comes equipped with USB Type-C ports, but there’s no mention of HDMI or DisplayPort connectivity. Still, we’d be surprised if it lacked them. LG also mentioned its “space-saving L-shaped stand”, which is said to help users to maintain a “clutter-free desk setup”.

LG didn't provide any full lists of specifications for the new UltraGear monitors and they’re not yet listed on its website, so we don’t know any more details so far. But we can expect to see the full specs, as well as pricing and release dates, when the new models go on show at CES 2025 in Las Vegas next week.
