LG's mystery W5 OLED 'Wallpaper' TV lands CES Innovation Award

LG Electronics appears to be holding something back, and it could yet surprise us with the launch of an additional OLED television later this year, in the shape of a new wireless “Wallpaper” model that landed a CES Innovation Award last week.

During the CES 2025 extravaganza last week, LG unveiled a host of new OLED televisions, including the new flagship G5 model, the wireless M5 featuring a Zero Connect box, plus the midrange C5 and entry-level B4 OLED TVs.

What it didn’t talk about was the LG W5 TV, which is said to be a 77-inch “Wallpaper” TV that features the company’s most advanced OLED display panel and latest-generation α11 AI Processor, plus the Zero Connect box that hides away those unsightly cables.

The W5 OLED TV surfaced in a press release that was published by CES itself, revealing that it landed one of its much-sought after “Innovation Awards”. According to CES, to be eligible to win one of the awards, the products “must be available in the market by April 1, 2025”, which suggests we could see it launch very soon.

If it does launch the W5 OLED TV this year, LG will be resurrecting an older design that first hit the market in 2017 with the LG W7 TV. That was an incredibly thin OLED TV that the company billed as the world’s first “Wallpaper TV”, and it could be mounted almost flush to the wall, using only magnets, for a more minimalist look. It was pretty similar to Samsung Electronic’s popular gallery-style TV, The Frame, albeit much bigger.

The company never followed up on the W7 OLED TV, and it was ultimately discontinued in 2020, perhaps due to one of its main drawbacks, which was the need to house all of the electronics in a bulky soundbar that impacted its aesthetic appeal somewhat.

But with the new W5 OLED model, LG appears to have a remedy for that issue thanks to the integration of its Zero Connect box.

LG had the this to say about the W5 TV in the CES press release:

"The 4K 77-inch W5 is the culmination of many years of LG technical knowhow. Less than ½” thick, it blends into your wall without visible AV wires. This is achieved without compromise, as the TV offers LG’s best OLED picture quality, featuring a brighter more colorful OLED display capable of gaming (up to 144Hz with VRR). It includes LG’s most advanced α11 AI Processor inside a Zero Connect Box that wireless sends your AV connections to the TV, eliminating clutter and freeing TV placement. The W5 is the perfect TV, offering the best of what is possible in a TV.”

LG’s statement suggests that the W5 is twice as thin as the much-vaunted G5 series OLED TV, which is already incredibly slim at just 1.1-inches thick.

It’s an interesting concept to say the least, but we should point out that even though the CES Innovation Award rules state eligible products should be released this year, LG is not compelled to do so. As such, the fact it failed to mention the W5 model at all during its own exhibits means it’s very much an open question as to whether or not we’ll see it go on sale in 2025.
