LG's C3 and G3 OLED TVs now getting webOS 24 update

LG Electronics says the latest version of its TV operating system, webOS 24, is now rolling out to 2023 LG OLED TVs. The update is first coming to the LG C3 and G3 models, but though it does introduce some new features, users won’t notice any radical differences in terms of user experience or performance.

The webOS 24 operating system is already available on this year’s LG OLED TVs, and the headline capability is its support for Google’s Chromecast, sometimes known simply as Google Cast. With this feature, it’s possible to stream content directly from an Android smartphone to compatible LG TVs, which is something that’s not possible on older models.

Also new is the enhanced Quick Cards feature that can help users to tidy up their home screen menus, and Voice ID, which automatically recognises the user’s voice and switches to their personal profile. Ideal for situations where you might just grab the remote from another family member who’s fallen asleep on the couch.

The new Sports Portal is another interesting feature that collates scores and other information such as kick off/start times from all of your favourite sports events, as defined in your profile.

LG first announced it would update last year’s OLED TVs to the latest version of its operating system earlier this year. It’s part of the company’s promise to deliver five years of software support for every new TV, ensuring they will remain up to date with all of the latest new features it develops. Previously, LG had always been somewhat lax about updates, with its newest innovations rarely being added to older models.

The rollout of firmware version 23.20.50 seems to be a gradual affair. FlatPanels HD reported that some users in Europe and North America have already gotten the update, whereas others are still waiting. If you don’t see it yet, hold tight, for it’s definitely on the way.

In addition to the LG C3 and G3 OLED TVs, the update will also come to the B3 OLED model, as well as last year’s QNED televisions and 8K LED TVs, though it’s not clear when they will get it. As always with LG, its premium OLED models get more favourable treatment. The company has also promised that some 2022 models will also get the webOS 24 update.

When the update does arrive, it should install itself automatically, so long as the automatic updates setting is applied. Those who have switched the default option off will instead have to install it manually through the settings menu by proceeding to Support > System Update > Check for Update.
