Asus and MSI have both announced new gaming monitors based on Samsung Display’s fourth-generation QD-OLED display technology, and they’re bumping up the resolution from 1440p to 4K, and including DisplayPort 2.1 for the first time.
The new 27-inch monitors are called the Asus PG27UCDM (left) and MSI 272URX (right), and they feature Samsung Display’s new 27-inch flat, native 4K resolution QD-OLED panel, which can also be found in Samsung’s newly announced Odyssey OLED G8 monitor. Like that model, they also feature 240Hz refresh rates.
In its press materials, MSI chose to focus on the QD-OLED panel’s 5-layer tandem design, which is said to improve the display’s luminance performance by 30% compared with its previous-generation monitors. Along with ASUS, it appears to confirm a peak brightness of 1,000 nits.
One difference between the two monitors is that ASUS’s model appears to support Dolby Vision alongside HDR10, whereas MSI’s does not.
The new monitors are also among the first in the world to be equipped with DisplayPort 2.1, which cranks up the bandwidth to 80 gigabytes per second. This should allow for upcoming new graphics cards from Nvidia and AMD to deliver a 4K 240Hz signal to the monitor without using any compression techniques, which can result in blackouts when switching between apps and games. So users should experience a much smoother transition.
Other features found on both monitors include HDMI 2.1 ports that support 4K resolution at 240Hz.
Like with Samsung, neither ASUS or MSI has yet released full specifications, pricing or availability details, so we’ll have to wait and see what they say next week when they go on show at CES 2025.
