MediaTek's new SoC to bring Dolby Vision gaming enhancements to more TVs

MediaTek has announced that more TVs will be able to support Dolby Vision's advanced gaming capabilities from next year thanks to the latest MediaTek chipset.

At present LG Electronics is the only TV brand that supports Dolby Vision gaming at 4K 120Hz and Variable Refresh Rate (VRR), but those enhancements will arrive on other TV brands from next year.

That’s because MediaTek’s upcoming Pentonic System-on-a-Chip for 8K and 4K TVs will be the first to support Dolby’s gaming enhancements, which also include Auto Low-Latency Mode (ALLM) and Dolby Vision Game Mode, a capability that helps to reduce latency.

"MediaTek Pentonic also improves gameplay with support for features designed for gaming in Dolby Vision,” MediaTek said in a statement. “This includes advancements TV OEMs will be able to offer their customers such as gaming in Dolby Vision at 4K 120Hz. In addition, Pentonic chips will further improve latency and display enhancements when gaming in Dolby Vision through Auto Low Latency Mode (ALLM) and Variable Refresh Rate (VRR) to notably improve the gaming experience for players."

MediaTek is a big player in the TV industry, as its chips power more than 60% of all new televisions worldwide. Notable brands whose TVs run MediaTek chips include Samsung Electronics, Panasonic, Philips and Sony. Other TV brands tend to use Realtek chips or a custom SoC.

The new MediaTek Pentonic SoC will be available for both 4K and 8K TV manufacturers starting in the second half of this year. That should give them more than enough time to incorporate them into their 2022 TV models, which means more Dolby Vision enhanced gaming- capable TVs will be on the market by the second half of nex year.

“We look forward to working with MediaTek and our OEM partners to bring stunning Dolby Vision images for more use cases to the next generation of 8K and 4K smart TVs,” said Dolby Labs Living Room VP Mathias Bendull.

The new chipset will also bring Dolby Vision IQ with Precision Detail to more TVs, MediaTek’s GM of TV Business Alex Chen revealed. "With our industry-leading chips, paired with astonishing visual and audio technologies powered by Dolby, MediaTek and Dolby are making truly immersive and cinematic entertainment experiences more accessible,” he said.
