Vizio is adding support for HDR10+ to some of its premium TV models via a new firmware update. 

Although Vizio hasn’t made any official announcement by itself, posts on both AVS Forum and Reddit say that firmware update 4.0.20.30 added support for the latest dynamic High Definition Resolution format when it started rolling out last week. 

News of the update was first reported by John Archer writing for Forbes. 

Vizio therefore becomes the first TV brand in the U.S. to offer multi-HDR support, following similar moves by Philips and Panasonic to do the same in Europe earlier this year. 

The official Vizio Support account on Reddit stated that the 2019 P-Series Quantum and P-Series Quantum X models, the 2018 P-Series and P-Series Quantum models, and 55- and 65-inch 2019 M-Series Quantum models are the first to receive HDR10+ support. 

Vizio TVs already supported Dolby Vision, HDR10 and HLG, and so the addition of HDR10+ means it now supports all four of today’s modern HDR formats. 

HDR10+ is similar to Dolby Vision in that it utilizes dynamic metadata to optimize picture quality on a scene-by-scene basis. Both systems are said to be especially useful at helping LCD TVs to take better advantage of HDR. 

HDR10+ is perhaps one of the least popular HDR formats, if the amount of available content is anything to go by. The biggest source of HDR10+ content is probably Amazon Prime Video, which offers most of its shows in the format. There are a number of 4K Blu-ray titles available in HDR10+ too, including Alien, Bohemian Rhapsody, Yesterday and Bad Times At The El Royale.

There is of course a much greater selection of content available in Dolby Vision, but the good news for Vizio TV owners is that the update makes these concerns a moot point. As of today, they’ll be able to enjoy the most immersive content irrespective of which HDR format it’s available in.
