Samsung Electronics is taking a big step towards reducing its carbon footprint with the launch of a new, eco-friendly packaging for its Lifestyle TV models.
Starting this week, Samsung’s The Frame, The Serif and The Sero TVs will all come wrapped up in eco-friendly packaging made from corrugated cardboard that can easily be reused or recycled.
The South Korean TV brand said its new packaging features a “dot matrix” design on each side of the cardboard. The idea with this is that it makes the boxes easier to cut up, so they can be reused for other purposes such as small end tables or houses for pets. To give customers some more inspiration, Samsung will throw in a manual filled with QR codes that link to instructions on how to build various items out of the cardboard.
Samsung’s innovative packaging idea has already landed the company a CES 2020 Innovation Award for promoting more efficient use of resources.
Samsung is going one step further too, teaming up with the British lifestyle magazine Deezen to try and encourage other companies to create eco-friendly packaging designs. Deezen is running a design competition from April 6, and will hand out various prizes for the most unique and practical designs that participants come up with. Samsung will also use some of the winning designs for its future products, it said.
“Consumers are more likely to purchase from a brand that shares similar fundamentals and values as they do, and with our eco-packaging, we believe that we can provide our customers with a new experience that considers the environment as an important way to express themselves,” said Samsung’s executive vice president of Visual Display Business, Kangwook Chun.
