Samsung Electronics has said that its two top-tier OLED TVs for 2024, the Samsung S95D and S90D, are available to preorder in the U.S. now, with prices starting at just $2,000 for the smallest and cheapest option, the 55-inch S90D. 

Samsung’s 2023 OLED TVs, the Samsung S95C and S90C, were among the best-rated TVs that money could buy last year, with some of the best black levels ever seen on an OLED TV and much higher-brightness than their predecessors. And all indications suggest that this year’s models will be even better. 

The company’s flagship model, the Samsung S95D will exclusively feature Samsung Display’s QD-OLED panels, which are more advanced this year, with brightness given an additional boost and the addition of a new anti-glare coating. Samsung calls this OLED Glare Free technology, and said it will significantly reduce screen glare while maintaining its exceptionally high levels of brightness and rich colours, even at wide viewing angles. Note that the OLED Glare Free feature is exclusive to the S95D. 

In addition, the S95D benefits from a new OLED HDR Pro technology that supports the HDR10, HDR10+ and HLG formats (but no Dolby Vision). It is said to deliver an enhanced range of Pantone-validated colours that should ensure a superior HDR viewing experience. In addition, the S95D comes with Samsung’s One Connect Box, which makes it possible for all of those messy wires and cables to be hidden away. 

In terms of audio, the S95D comes with a superior 70-watt 4.2.2 channel sound system that supports both Dolby Atmos and Object Tracking Sound+. 

As for the Samsung S90D, some buyer caution is advised. That’s because Samsung has effectively created an OLED panel lottery, with some models featuring its QD-OLED display technology and others incorporating LG Display’s WRGB OLED panels. The S90D will be sold in a wide range of sizes, with 42-, 48-, 55-, 65, 77- and 83-inch models available, and the size of the model will potentially determine the exact panel type. 

Those who purchase a 42-, 48- or 83-inch S90D will definitely be getting an LG OLED panel, as Samsung Display doesn’t manufacture QD-OLED panels in those sizes. But for those who opt for a 55-, 65- or 77-inch model, things are much more confusing. Those sets are likely to feature both types of panel, and Samsung may well decide to go with different panels on a regional basis, but it hasn't really made this very clear. Instead, it just markets both the S95D and S90D as “OLED TVs”, without differentiating the panel technology used. 

Despite the panel lottery, the Samsung S90D OLED TV will surely be a very capable television, with many of the same features found on the S95D. The main differences are the lack of the anti-glare coating tech and the One Connect Box, which are exclusive to the S95D. In addition, it will also have a smaller and therefore less powerful 40-watt 2.1 channel sound system onboard. ‘

In terms of their shared functionality, both the S95D and S90D will feature Samsung’s excellent Tizen OS, a speedy 144Hz refresh rate that’s ideal for video games, new AI enhancements, the all-new NQ4 AI Gen2 processor, 4K AI upscaling and a new Active Voice Amplifier Pro capability that’s said to boost the clarity and volume of dialogue, so you can better hear it above the sound effects. 

The Samsung S95D is available to per-order now, priced at $2,599 for the 55-inch model, $3,399 for the 65-inch version and $4,599 for the biggest 77-inch model. 

As for the S90D, only two models are available thus far – the 55-inch version, priced at $1,999, and the 65-inch model, which costs $2,699.
