Samsung’s new soundbars include the new S- and Q-series models that selectively include room calibration, Dolby Atmos and AirPlay 2 for added functionality.

The top model in Samsung’s Q-series soundbars is the HW-Q950A (pictured above), which is an 11.1.4 channel soundbar with support for both Dolby Atmos and DTS:X. The main device is actually a 7.1.2 channel unit, but it includes an additional subwoofer to increase depth and immersion. The full package boasts not only the standard forward-facing drivers but also up- and side-firing speakers that should create a totally immersive soundstage.

The subwoofer has a neat feature, coming equipped with a built-in microphone that can detect the acoustic traits of where it has been positioned. It then uses Space EQ to calibrate itself accordingly to deliver the most appropriate bass.

Also new is the Samsung HW-Q950A soundbar range, which is a 4.0.2 channel setup, and the HW-Q800A, which offers 3.1.2 channels. Both are equipped with Dolby Atmos and DTS:X support.

Moving on, Denon this week announced its Home 550 soundbar that delivers immersive 3D Dolby Atmos and DTS:X surround sound via a six-driver array. It can also play high resolution music from various sources, including the HEOS app. It will also support multi-room audio and voice controls through Amazon Alexa via a firmware update that’s set to come in April.

The Denon Home 550 soundbar can be paired with a separately-sold DSW-1H wireless subwoofer that throws in some additional bass to create a complete 5.1 system, and it can be further expanded with other Denon Home speakers, the company said. Connectivity options include Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and Apple AirPlay 2, which makes it easy to stream music from services including Apple Music, Amazon Music HD, Spotify, TIDAL and others, as well as files stored on user’s smartphone and other devices.

In addition, users will get access to millions of songs, including tons of high-resolution tracks thanks to the built-in HEOS functionality. Best of all, the HEOS app enables full multi-room support so users can play different songs in each room of the house, or stream the same music throughout the home using the Party Mode.

Denon said the Home Sound Bar 550 will go on sale in the U.K. in mid-February priced at £599. There’s no word yet on when Samsung’s new Q-series and S-series soundbars will go on sale.
