Samsung smart TV owners are getting a number of new TV channels to watch at no extra costs. The new channels are being added to the Samsung TV Plus app, which is an ad-supported Free TV platform that’s also available on Samsung’s tablets and smartphones.
The South Korean technology giant said the new channels include DAZN Women’s Football and DAZN Ringside, which offer live and replayed coverage of some of the world’s top women’s football matches, mixed martial arts and boxing fights. The channels also show documentaries and other related programming.
A third new channel is PGA TOUR, which, as the name suggests, is a professional golf-focused broadcaster that covers many of the world’s top tournaments. It offers both live coverage and recaps of classic tournaments, and is a must have for all avid golfing fans.
The new channels are a nice boost to the existing sports content on Samsung TV Plus, which includes the Tennis Channel and FIFA+, and should be especially interesting to sports fans whose budgets don’t quite stretch to a Sky Sports or BT Sports subscription.
Samsung’s announcement extends beyond sports, as there are other new channels including the full suite of UKTV offerings. They include UKTV Play Laughs, Play Uncovered, Play Full Throttle and Play Heroes. The UKTV channels span genres such as comedy, drams, thrillers, detective stories and motor racing.
Finally, Samsung said it’s getting a new news channel in the shape of NBC News, which offers 24/7 coverage of the latest happenings in the U.S.
Samsung TV Plus is one of the most accessible free TV services, with the app coming pre-installed in every new Samsung TV that’s sold. It can also be found on most Samsung phones and tablets, and its selection of content is available entirely for free, no subscription required. It competes with rival free and ad-supported services such as Tubi, Plex, LG Channels, Pluto TV, The Roku Channel, Freevee and Peacock.
The downside with any of these apps is that you’ll be interrupted occasionally by advertisements, but they’re less common than they are in traditional cable TV services.
Samsung TV Plus Europe’s head of content acquisition Jennifer Batty said the company is delighted to be able to offer the new channels within its ever-expanding roster of sports and entertainment content. “If young fans were glued to the edge of their seats for the World Cup Final, the new DAZN Women’s Football channel will continue to inspire the next generation of female players,” she promised.
