Movie locker service Movies Anywhere, which lets users combine films they’ve bought from different online stores into a single library, has launched a native application for LG smart TVs. The app is available now on LG TVs running its webOS software from 2017 onwards, including its OLED TVs.
Movies Anywhere links to services such as Amazon Prime Video, Apple TV, Google Play, FandangoNow and Vudu, giving users a single place to access all of the movie content they’ve purchased. The service has been around for a few years already, available on Apple TV, FireTV, Chromecast and Roku devices, but LG is the first TV manufacturer to offer a native app.
The service supports 4K resolution streaming, Dolby Vision HDR, and Dolby Atmos, but it’s not clear if the latter feature is supported by the new LG app at this time.
With Movies Anywhere, users can gain access to a catalogue of almost 8,000 movies from producers including Disney, Sony Pictures, Universal and Warner Bros. However, the Movies Anywhere website notes that Paramount, Lionsgate, and MGM’s films are not currently eligible.
LG said its version of the app is available on all TVs that run webOS version 3.5 and later.
That unfortunately means that owners of LG TVs from 2016 and earlier are out of luck, as those models are no longer being updated. The webOS platform made its debut in 2014.
The launch of the new app comes just weeks after Movies Anywhere announced a new Screen Pass feature that lets users share content they have purchased with friends for a limited time at no extra cost. The feature is currently available in beta, but the company is planning a full launch later in the year.
