LG Display said this week its OLED TV and monitor displays have become the first in the industry to achieve the new “Circadian Friendly” certification from the independent testing and inspection organization TÜV Rheinland.

LG Display said the award is a “groundbreaking achievement for the industry” that shows how its OLED products meet the highest possible standards for minimizing their impact on people’s quality of life and ability to sleep well at night.

While displays have become an essential part of modern life, their impact on sleep quality has become a major concern for health professionals. There are millions of people in the world who suffer from sleep disorders, and it’s believed that artificial light from displays is something that negatively affects people’s health. Scientists believe that using digital screens, such as a TV, computer or smartphone, in the evening can sometimes disrupt the body’s natural circadian rhythm.

The circadian rhythm refers to the biological pattern in humans that occurs over a 24-hour cycle. If something disrupts this rhythm, it can potentially contribute to sleep disorders. As such, experts recommend switching off displays around one or two hours before going to bed, in order to restore the body’s natural sleep cycle.

LG Display said the Circadian Friendly certification underscores its commitment to ensuring that its OLED displays have minimal impact on people’s sleep patterns.

To achieve TÜV Rheinland’s Circadian Friendly certificate, products must undergo rigorous testing based on a Circadian Stimulus metric that was designed by the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute’s Lighting Research Center. By meeting the highest standards, LG Display said its OLED panels have the lowest impact on viewer’s biological patterns while maintaining the highest standards of picture quality. It stated that its OLED displays were able to achieve “the highest rating of the Certification Scheme for display panels with a Circadian Friendly Level (CFL) 1.”

“LG Display’s innovative OLED panels help people attain a healthier life while enjoying the immersive benefits of exceptional image quality,” said Frank Holzmann, Global Business Field Manager at TÜV Rheinland.
