LG display, which is the subsidiary of LG Electronics that’s focused on building TV and monitor displays that are supplied to other manufacturers, has teased the upcoming launch of a new OLED panel that may appear in high-end gaming monitors later this year.

The new, 27-inch OLED panel is said to pair 1440p resolution with a blazing fast 0.03ms response time and a whopping 480Hz refresh rate, making it the fastest OLED monitor display the company has launched so far.

Some readers may recall that LG Display has already announced a 32-inch OLED monitor that can achieve 480Hz refresh rates, but that is not quite the same. Rather, it’s a 4K 240Hz monitor panel that can run 480Hz at Full HD resolution only, utilizing a special Dual-Hz mode. However, the new panel goes one better, enabling 480Hz at native 4K resolution.

With the new panel, LG Display appears to have one-upped Samsung Electronics, which today announced its 27-inch Odyssey OLED G6 gaming monitor that delivers a slightly lower 360Hz native refresh rate at 4K resolution. That panel was developed by Samsung Display, and uses QD-OLED technology rather than LG’s WOLED tech. It’s likely that Samsung’s panel will also be adopted in forthcoming monitors from brands such as MSI and Dell Alienware, too.

LG may also claim that its new, 480HZ 4K panel is brighter than Samsung’s, as it uses the company’s Micro Lens Array technology to ramp up the brightness and increase its viewing angles. In addition, LG says its panel emits the lowest level of blue light in the industry.

Although it sounds exciting, LG appears to be slightly behind Samsung in terms of its release schedule. While it says the new panel will launch later this year, no actual products have been announced, not even by LG Electronics. So it remains to be seen which other brands will adopt the new panel, and if they’re able to launch an actual product this year.

LG Display said the 27-inch OLED 480Hz panel will launch in the first half of the year, so any new products will probably arrive in the summer at the earliest. The company – and other brands – is expected to showcase its new lineup of OLED gaming displays at CES 2024 next week, where we may learn more.

“To strengthen our leadership in the high-end gaming display market, we will continue to harness the power of OLED's distinctive qualities such as ultra-high refresh rates, fast response times, and perfect black for next-level viewing experiences," said Won-seok Kang, VP and Head of Large Display Product Planning Division at LG Display.
