LG Electronics is looking to better compete with rival Samsung Electronics in the “smart monitor” business, with the launch of two affordable products that come with webOS 23 built-in, meaning they effectively double as a smart TV.
Samsung kick started the smart monitor concept back in 2020 when it announced a series of lower cost monitors that run the Tizen operating system found in its smart TVs. LG entered the arena last year, and is now building on that debut with the launch of the 32-inch 32SR53FS (pictured) and the 27-inch 27SR50F.
The models are cheap and cheerful affairs, with the 32SR53FS model set to go on sale priced at just $200, while the 27SR50F model will cost $230, the company said. They’ll go on sale in the U.S. “soon”, the company said, followed by other nations before the end of the year.
Both of the smart monitors run the webOS 23 operating system, which comes with a redesigned interface compared to webOS 22. It offers pre-installed apps such as Netflix, Disney+ and Apple TV, and functionality including support for Apple AirPlay 2 and HomeKit.
The idea is that you get a basic computer monitor that can double as a small TV screen with streaming capabilities. It’s possible to install applications such as Microsoft 365, and connect remotely to Windows 365, Chrome Remote Desktop and Azure Virtual to view and edit documents such as Word and Powerpoint files, without needing to connect a PC.
In other words, they’re like business PC replacements, but with a much lower price tag. They are most suitable for businesses that enable employees to work remotely via a virtual desktop.
Given the low price tag, the specifications certainly don’t set the world alight. Both models come with basic, low-contrast IPS LCD displays with Full HD resolution only, and feature a pair of 5-watt speakers.
They’re good enough for performing basic work-related tasks, but professional users and dedicated gamers will probably want to look elsewhere.
