LG Electronics has a long established tradition of flooding newsrooms with announcements prior to the annual Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, and it has done so once again with the early reveal of its 2024 QNED and QNED Mini-LED TVs.
The new range of LG QNED TVs includes an enormous, 98-inch model that boasts advanced artificial intelligence-powered processing and extensive personalisation features, the company said.
The company hopes that the new TVs, which are more affordable than its flagship OLED models, will help boost its fortunes following a decline in sales in 2023.
One of the most exciting things in the announcement is the prospect of the new α8 AI Processor, which is said to be a big improvement on its most sophisticated chip. It provides a 1.3-times increase in AI performance, a 2.3-times boost in graphic performance, and 1.6-times faster processing speeds. It also supports a new version of LG’s AI Picture Pro technology, which uses deep learning algorithms to improve picture quality, the company said.
In addition, the company announced another update for the webOS operating system, which now offers a guarantee of future software updates “to give more smart TV owners the most up-to-date user experience for the next five years.”
LG is also offering to upgrade some older TVs to the latest version of webOS. The new version of webOS will first appear on the LG QNED Mini-LED 8K models launched in 2022, the QNED99 and QNED95, and will be extended to further models in the QNED range later.
The new 2024 QNED models will also benefit from an enhanced version of LG’s AI Sound Pro tech, which enables 9.1.2 surround sound. Meanwhile, the WOW Orchestra functionality enables the TV’s built-in speakers to be combined with any LG soundbar to create a more realistic, 3D sound experience, the company said.
As for the display, it features LG’s quantum dot and Nanocell colour technologies to provide crisp and clear images with superior colour reproduction, enhanced by the new processor.
LG also spoke about its new customisation features. With the latest version of webOS, users will be able to create individual profiles to ensure they receive tailored content recommendations, similar to what Samsung Electronics has offered through its TVs for some time. The TVs will even be able to recognize each user based on their voice. So if someone picks up the voice remote and commands the TV to open the Netflix app, for example, it will know which profile to use in order to do that.
One of the new features of webOS is a Dynamic Q Card, which is meant to provide faster access to key services, such as Home Office, Home Hub, Games and Sports.
