Chinese electronics giant Huawei is giving away its latest smartwatch in London today, but there’s a catch – you’ll have to dive headlong into the chilly, murky depths of the Royal Victoria Dock in order to grab one. 

The company has opened what it says is the world’s first ever “dive-thru” for the occasion, and is inviting brave swimmers to take the plunge in order to bag themselves a new Huawei Watch GT 2. Those who do will be able to help themselves from a selection of “thousands of pounds worth” of smart watches at a submerged kiosk. 

The event is of course a publicity stunt that highlights the waterproof casing of the Watch GT 2, which will retail at £199.

British Olympian and Celebrity MasterChef winner Greg Rutherford was the first to take a dip when he helped to open the Dive-thru. 

"I’m used to high intensity sports but jumping in the freezing cold water of the Royal Victoria Dock isn’t something I tend to do on a regular basis,” Rutherford said. "But I didn’t mind getting in the water for a GT 2. I like its Open Swim mode which keeps track of my stroke in the water."

Besides swimming, the Huawei Watch GT 2 is compatible with 14 other sports, including running, cycling, climbing, triathlon and rowing. 

The wearable can deliver all kinds of targeted pre-exercise data for analysis, as well as analysis of the actual exercises and professional advice afterwards. 

Features include support for Bluetooth 5.1, and enough storage space for 500 MP3s. There’s also fitness tracking software, a sleep tracker, activity reminders, calorie counter and a heart monitor that can provide alerts on irregular heart rhythms on board. 

There are two versions of the GT 2 available, including a 46mm and a 42mm model. The former sports a 1.39-inch, 454x454 OLED display and offers a 14-day battery life. The latter comes with a 1.2-inch, 390x390 OLED display and keeps going for up to 7-days. 

Both watches are touch-enabled with support for slide and touch gestures. 

Those who’re willing to take a leap of faith and get their hands on the handy fitness gizmo will have to do so from 12pm to 4pm this Saturday.

It’s not clear how many watches Huawei is willing to give away, but the company said it will be on a first come, first serve basis, so be sure to dust off those speedos and head out early to avoid disappointment.
