Flipkart Is Selling A Nokia-branded Android TV In India

The days of Nokia dominating the market for mobile phones might be a distant memory, but that hasn’t stopped the brand from trying to reinvent itself in other markets. And last week it did exactly that with the launch of the first ever Nokia-branded TV, which has just gone on sale in India.

The TV doesn’t actually have much to do with Nokia, which sold its mobile phone business years ago and now mostly focuses on selling telecommunications equipment. Instead, the “Nokia Android TV”, as it’s called, is actually manufactured and distributed by India’s leading online retailer Flipkart. But the TV has licensed the Nokia logo for what that’s worth, no doubt to try and gain traction from its brand recognition.

Flipkart said the Nokia Android TV is a 55-inch LCD display with 4K resolution and support for Dolby Vision High Dynamic Range. It boasts 400 nits of peak brightness, 60Hz refresh rate, and 178-degree viewing angles. The TV runs Android 9, and so it offers access to apps through the Google Play store. Netflix and YouTube are pre-installed. It also comes with built-in Chromecast, three HDMI inputs, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth connectivity. As for the audio, it offers two 24-watt speakers as part of a sound system from JBL by Harman. The specs aren’t exactly astounding, but nothing to be sneered at as it’s pretty much what you’d expect from any run-of-the-mill TV today.

Whether or not the Nokia branding will help with sales remains to be seen, but the low price point is at least encouraging. Flipkart said the Nokia Android TV will be sold at 42,000 Indian rupees, which works out at around £455. That puts the TV in direct competition with similar offerings from companies such as TCL and OnePlus, which are often seen as more affordable alternatives to the premium 55-inch 4K-ready smart TVs sold by brands such as LG, Samsung and Sony.
