The Spectrum Black 4K is the latest high-end monitor from Dough and it’s also the world’s first 32-inch 4K OLED display featuring a 240Hz refresh rate. Targeted at gamers, it looks to be an absolute beast of a monitor with its 0.03ms response times, high brightness, brilliant colours, split-screen functionality and an array of connectivity ports.
Dough said the Spectrum Black 4K is made out of super durable Gorilla Glass and that buyers will be able to choose between a glossy or matte finish. According to Dough, the glossy coating has been enhanced compared to that which first appeared on its older Spectrum displays, increasing the ambient contrast ratio by as much as 40%, while reducing reflectivity by up to 70%.
Dough has a reputation for building high quality gaming monitors, with its previous flagship model being the Dough Spectrum 4K 144Hz glossy monitor. That model was heavily praised for its rich and vibrant colours, a good selection of ports and its expressive design.
Everything about the Spectrum Black 4K suggests it will be equally well received. With its 32-inch size, 240Hz refresh rate and super-fast 0.03ms response time, it’s going to be a solid choice for any gamer looking for the most advanced monitor. It supports all of the Variable Refresh Rate technology a gamer could want, with Nvidia’s G-Sync, AMD’s FreeSync and VESA A-Sync, plus auto low-latency mode.
In addition, the Dough Spectrum Black 4K supports Black Frame Insertion, which is a feature that displays games with enhanced clarity for fast-moving objects. It also boosts the performance of fast-paced games, Dough said. It works by switching the pixel in the display to black after every refresh, resulting in the viewer perceiving much smoother motion. Dough is the first brand to integrate this technology into an OLED gaming monitor.
Other specs include support for 10-bit colour, 100% coverage of the sRGB spectrum and 98.5% coverage of the DCI-P3. Given those capabilities, the Dough Spectrum Black 4K should also be ideal for non-gaming tasks, such as design and editing.
Dough said the display panel is VESA DisplayHDR True Black 400 certified and provides 450 nits peak brightness, which puts it in the upper-end performance range for OLED monitors. There’s also a funky split-screen mode for those who would like to use multiple inputs, plus a picture-in-picture mode and support for standard VESA 100 x 100 mounts.
In terms of connectivity, its got all the options that count, with HDMI 2.1, DisplayPort, USB C 100W, USB C, USB A and a 3.5mm headphone jack.
Dough has in the past had a somewhat dented reputation for struggling to keep up with demand for its products and customer support, but it has announced a pre-order program that may help to alleviate these problems.
The good thing about it is that Dough is offering some serious discounts to those who pre-order, with the lowest price offered to those who pay up first, and staggered price increases as more orders are filled and it nears the final release date. So it’s a strong incentive to get in early.
According to Dough, the matte model will start at $699 for the first preorders, while the glossy model will begin at $799. The prices will increase, with the final retail price expected to be $1,099 and $1,199 respectively, when they finally hit the stores.
