U.S. TV startup Displace is intended to disrupt the television industry with what it claims will be the world’s first “truly wireless TV”. Slated to debut at the 2023 Consumer Electronics Show, the 55-inch OLED TV does not even have a power cord and will run on rechargeable batteries instead.
The Displace TV therefore promises to be an entirely different beast to what currently takes pride of place in most living rooms. No more cables dangling from the back, at all, is the promise. But there’s more to it than that, for the Displace TV can be combined with other Displace TVs to form any other sized TV. For instance, four TVs can be fitted together to create a 110-inch wall-mounted display, the company said.
This is enabled by Displace’s proprietary active-loop vacuum technology, with the panels slotting together with a slight push - as opposed to the more traditional permanent wall mounting.
The lack of cables also makes the TV easily transportable, helped by the fact that each 55-inch display weighs under 9 kilograms.
One of the most novel things is the rechargeable battery that powers the Displace TV. The batteries are said to have a lifetime of around one month, based on six hours of viewing time per day. They can be charged one at a time while the TV is operational thanks to Displace’s proprietary hot-swappable battery system. With this, the panels wirelessly connect to a base unit that must be plugged into an electrical outlet, though this can be hidden away out of sight.
Yet another novelty is the lack of a remote control. Instead, the Displace TV relies exclusively on hand gestures, voice assistants and touch panels, making for a more interactive experience than with traditional TVs. To make this possible, the TV has an integrated 4K camera and supports Wi-Fi 6E, effectively making it more of a giant tablet device than a television.
Clearly, Displace is intent on displacing the TV market with its radical and innovative display, promising a very quirky alternative to the cluttered and bulky televisions that adorn most living rooms today. Easily transportable and completely wire-free, the Displace TV provides a more hands-on experience to boot. The company said it will be possible to make a reservation for its ground-breaking TV on January 5 by making a fully-refundable deposit, but there’s no word yet on how much it will cost.
The company added that the TV will ship by “late 2023”, but we can expect to see one on display prior to that at CES.
