As we celebrate the arrival of 2018, it appears that LG Display’s New Year resolution is 8K, or 7680×4320 pixels on an 88-inch OLED panel, according to a press release issued today by the South Korean company.

LG 8K OLED

LG Display said it has developed the world’s first 88in 8K OLED display which will be showcased at the firm’s booth at CES 2018 in Las Vegas this month. 8K is 16 times more than the high-definition resolution of 1920×1080, and four times more than the ultra high-definition (UHD) resolution of 3840×2160.

Besides the usual advantages of true blacks, vibrant colours and wide viewing angles, OLED’s self-emissive display characteristics also allow for higher resolution without compromising brightness and design. In general, because higher resolution is attained by reducing the size of every pixel, aperture ratio is reduced too, leading to lower brightness.

LG Display claims OLEDs are self-illuminating and therefore not as severely hampered by aperture ratio, making them optimal for 8K panels, unlike transmissive LCDs which require more powerful backlight units that increase energy consumption, material costs, and the bulk of the final products.

It is important to differentiate between LG Display and LG Electronics. The former is the arm which sells OLED panels to all TV brands with OLED TVs on the market today, including Panasonic and Sony. The latter is the company that makes the OLED televisions you can buy off the shelves, such as the B7, C7 and E7. We plan to meet both companies at CES 2018 which kicks off in Las Vegas next week to cover their new products.
