LG Display is showing off its position as one of the world’s leaders in OLED display manufacturing with the unveiling of several new technologies at the 2020 Society for Information Display (SID) conference, which is taking place as an all-digital event this year due to the coronavirus pandemic. 

The event isn’t specifically TV-oriented, but the array of technologies LG has on display provides a few clues as to some of the innovations we might be able to look forward too in our living rooms in the next few years. 

LG Display is showcasing its latest OLED advancements in two different sections of the “Digital Showroom” on the 2020 SID website. 

They include the “Unlimited Design Freedom Zone”, where the company is showcasing some new foldable and transparent OLED products. These include a new, 12.8-inch rollable OLED display that effectively miniaturises its rollable TV concept, and a 13.3-inch foldable OLED display that’s much bigger than existing foldable OLED screens, and a 65-inch bendable OLED display. There’s also a new, 55-inch transparent OLED display that offers 40% transparency, LG said. 

Rollable TVs are already a thing of course, and while it remains to be seen if a foldable or bendable TV will ever catch on, transparent OLED displays are increasingly being used in the commercial display sector for advertising purposes. So the new designs are an indication of where we could be headed. 

Meanwhile, the “Enhanced User Experience Zone” contains a new 27-inch curved P-OLED automotive dashboard display, plus a Digital Cockpit that incorporates a 12.3-inch Cinematic Sound OLED display, which are a big hint of what vehicle display technology could look like in the next few years. The company is also showing off some “next-generation OLED displays” for Virtual Reality and 3-D applications, though actual use cases seem a bit ambiguous at this time. 

LG Display’s digital showroom also features several videos that are meant to give virtual visitors an idea of how the new display technologies might be used in future.

“We will lead the innovation of future displays based on differentiated technology that only OLED can realize,” said LG Display’s executive vice president and chief technology officer Dr. In-Byeong Kang.
